How Do I Uncover My Spiritual Gifts?

Notice the things that energize you and seem to come naturally. Remember the quote from the movie Chariots of Fire when Eric Liddell explained to his sister why he was postponing his return to the mission field in order to race in the Olympics? "Because when I run, I feel the pleasure of God."

Every spiritual gift gives off clues. Your spiritual gift will cause you to react a certain way in a given situation. If there's a problem, people with the spiritual gift of shepherding will be immediately concerned that people are cared for and growing in Christlikeness as a result of the issue. Those with the gift of intercession (prayer) will immediately say, "We need to pray about this," while those with a leadership gift will begin looking at solutions for the problem.

It can be difficult to know what your spiritual gift is. For the Christian we know that it is important to identify your gift(s) as it is commanded by God to serve Him and others by using them. There are tons of books available addressing the question "What is my gift?" - some are really great too! But just the vastness of books written and purchased - indicates the yearning within many individuals to identify their gift and help answer the heart's question "How can I be used by God?".
I have thought about a way to help identify such gifts. It isn't very complex - nor very profound - but it can give clues that lead to discovery of ones gift. I thought about "Why are we given gifts by God?". Gifts are for building up believers, caring for those in need, and basically, living out through action the heart of God to His people. I thought about a clear unverisal time when one is in need - and I came up with a stay in the hospital. Then I thought about how different people respond to someone who is sick, hurt, or injured and has been admitted for several days to receive care. When you hear that someone you know is in the hospital how do you respond?
Do you volunteer to prepare meals for their family while they are ill?
Do you visit to give encouraging words?
Do you feel led to begin a prayer chain and take time to stop by their bedside to pray for them?
Do you try to find out if they will need financial help while they recover and you take care of it?
Do you look for books and tapes that could be a source of support?
Do you sit beside their bed and quietly hold their hand and listen to them talk through their illness?
Do you start networking to find specialists and second opinions to help them make good decisions concerning their treatment and care?
Do you write letters or send cards with carefully worded notes of care?
Do you desire to send flowers or balloons to bring visual beauty into their room or home?
Do you offer to clean their home? Run errands?
Obviously the list could go on and on concerning addressing the possible needs of one in the hospital. Thinking about this I also saw something pretty wonderful. When everyone uses their specific gift to care for one in need - well - all their needs are met. So think about it! If you found out today that someone you love is in the hospital - what would you do? Could this be a clue to what your natural gift may be? Just thinking.....

I saw that you have a blog on spiritual gifts. Looks great!

We're building the blogroll of our spiritual gifts blog on UrbanMinistry.org. We'd like to add your blog to our

blogroll list, and were wondering if you would do the same for us. You could just call the link spiritual gifts at

    UrbanMinistry.org. The URL is http://www.urbanministry.org/spiritual_gifts

It's good to see others with a passion for spiritual gifts and linking to each other seems like a great way to

expand the community of people trying to bring social change on this issue.

Let me know if you have any questions or if you have other ideas on how we might collaborate and connect our

    communities.
