    Top 10 Articles from 2007

This week, as I reflected on Gifted for Leadership's first year, I decided to do a little analysis. I checked back through our "traffic patterns" for the last 12 months to find the most-read articles on the blog. I though you might be interested in this information, as I was, so I've decided to share it with you. Here's a list of the Top 10 most-read articles of 2007, along with a short excerpt from each one:

    10. Edit Your Schedule, Practice Self-Control
    by Susan Arico (June)
"Most of the tasks that fill my time on 20-task days are reactive and even compulsive: living life in a knee-jerk fashion. Hurrying through, I skip reflection, prayer, and paring down my list to the truly important. These omissions are actually a form of laziness -
a reluctance or unwillingness to do necessary work; seeking the easy way out. We think of laziness as idleness and procrastination, but it can also come in the shape of frenetic activity and over-full days." (Read more?)

    9. 3 Temptations of Leadership, Part 2
    by Amy Simpson (April)
"It's easy to see how we face this temptation. Who doesn't want to be popular? Who doesn't want all the glory and attention and spectacular scene that come with success? Even if we know the downsides to popularity, none of us can completely resist its pull. And, wired for worship as we are, we love a popularity contest and a hero." (Read more?)

    Gifted for Leadership Survey Results

Thanks so much for responding to the survey we posted a few weeks ago. We had an overwhelming response, and you shared so many great ideas (far too many to mention here)!

I thought you might like to know who else is visiting this blog, so I'll share a few highlights with you:

    Your age:
Forty percent of you are under the age of forty. A third of you are between the ages of 41 and 50. The rest (26 percent) are over 50.

    Marital status:
Nearly 75 percent of you are married. Fifteen percent are single, never married. The remaining 10 percent are single, either divorced or widowed.

    Church leadership:
Among those of you involved in church ministry, you're serving in a variety of places. More than a third of you (34%) are serving as small group/Bible study leaders. Another third are ministry leaders/coordinators. Pastor/minister describes 17 percent, and 16 percent are committee leaders/members. Other common responses were choir/praise band member (14 percent) and Sunday school teacher (13 percent).

Thanks again to all of you who completed the survey. You shared so many great ideas, we're not sure which one to do next. In the meantime, while we're figuring it out, I hope you continue to enjoy the community of women who are contributing to this blog.

Help for a Woman in Ministry

    Gifted Women:

This morning I spoke with Donna, a church administrator and gifted leader, about a struggle she's facing. God has given her a passion for helping her church develop stronger leaders and mobilize them for ministry. She has taken the initiative to read, attend training workshops, and spend countless hours thinking about what her church might do to elevate its ministry. She has translated her passion and her knowledge into a compelling vision, which she shared with her pastor. The pastor embraced her vision and gave her license to present the vision to the church elders and lay leaders. The church was excited about the vision and the plan. About a month later, the trouble started.

The privilege of hearing individual stories makes her increasingly aware of God's larger story, the story she most loves and which she addictively, ceaselessly re-imagines, re-writes, and re-tells in ways that (hopefully) invite redemption, passion, and life. A speaker, teacher, and trainer for over fifteen years in both religious and secular settings, she also serves as a spiritual director, walking alongside others as they travel toward and with God.

    Button_Eileen.jpg
Eileen Button is a newspaper columnist for The Flint Journal in Michigan and is an active member of the National Society of Newspaper Columnists. Her commentaries on family, politics, faith and community life are well received. Readers often tell her, "I don't always agree with you, but you always make me think."

She is the author of the forthcoming book, When Faith is a Four-Letter Word, a memoir of the years she and her husband spent planting a church in center city Philadelphia with the goal of "reaching the city for Jesus!" They left after four years, their faith bruised and battered. Button is living proof that sometimes you take a leap of faith and end up praying from a very deep pile of dookie.

Eileen holds degrees in communication from Roberts Wesleyan College and S.U.N. Y. Brockport. She is an adjunct professor of communication at Mott Community College and has previously taught at Roberts Wesleyan College, Eastern College, and S.U.N.Y Fredonia. She also speaks at women's events, retreats, and conferences where she focuses on family relationships, communication, and voluntary simplicity.

Although "columnist," "pastor's wife," "professor," and "guest speaker" are all nice titles, her favorite title is that of "mom." She credits that to her three amazing children (Stephen, Kristina, and Jordan) who attempt to drive her crazy but remind her of what's truly important. Eileen has been accused of sleeping with her pastor, Brad Button, to whom, thankfully, she is happily married. His faith in God and passion for ministry give her great courage.

    Nicole Unice

    Unice_Nicole.jpg

Nicole Unice loves being a "professional talker" in her roles as counselor, speaker, and writer. She works part-time in a private counseling practice, specializing in teenage girl and women's issues, as well as serving as director of women's ministries for Hope Church in Richmond, VA.

Nicole received her B.A. in Psychology from the College of William and Mary (97) and her M.A. in Christian Counseling from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary (04). She is married to her college sweetheart and has three children under six, who highly prefer her silly-dance and grilled cheese skills to her professional talking abilities.

The common thread in Nicole's many roles is her passion for igniting women's hearts in their personal relationships with Jesus, particularly through scripture and spiritual formation.
